The tourism and translation industries have partnered and complemented each other for decades; connecting with diverse overseas audiences, and enticing them to visit, requires expert linguistic and cultural knowledge of both the region which is promoting tourism and the intended audience.

This article delves into the connection between the two industries, looking at how translation providers assist travel and tourism firms, and how this enhances the travel experience for tourists.

Language and travel

The travel and tourism industry has long been familiar with the exceptional language requirements of travellers, and the need to ensure that tourists are able to access information in their native language while they are travelling.

The industry quickly adopted the benefits of the digital revolution, allowing tourists the opportunity to check out hotels, book excursions, take virtual tours, and so on, all from the comfort of their own home.

However, in order to appeal to tourists from diverse regions of the world and ensure that online content is accessible in many languages, the travel and tourism industry partner with translation providers.

Translation providers offer the following services to the travel and tourism industry:

Localization

Translation

Design

Interpreting

These services offer the industry the ability to connect with global customers in their native language, ensuring design aspects are familiar, content is culturally appropriate, and that their brand is universally recognizable.

Language and media

We rely heavily on our smartphones in today’s ultra-connected world and this is especially true when we are on holiday.

We might need to ask for directions, view a menu, search for a particular service, renew a visa, or book a day trip, and in order to do this quickly and effectively we need to access content, on a smartphone or device, which is in our native language.

The travel and tourism industry, including everything from airlines to government departments, understand this requirement and translation providers ensure they deliver.

Social media sites, websites, menus, health and safety information, customer services, legal and governmental information are usually all available in multiple languages for users to access while they are travelling.

Translation providers use native-speaking linguists to ensure that the language used within each translation is accurate and culturally appropriate.

Travel, tourism and Creative Word

We are experts in providing quality translations for the travel and tourism industry and have partnered with household names for two decades.

We are also based in the heart of a country that caters for tourists as a cultural obligation so we really do appreciate the importance of language in demonstrating hospitality.

Working within the whole chain of the tourism and hospitality industry, from hotels to marketing companies, and from airlines to government tourism departments, ensures we appreciate the complete picture and gives us a unique perspective in understanding and catering to the needs of the whole industry.

This is why our business approach, people, words and passion are different, and we excel at what we do – just ask our clients…

For many years, the English language has been the ‘lingua franca’ and research by the British Council suggests it may stay this way for some time to come.

In a new publication, ‘The Future of English: Global Perspectives’ the authors sought to discover how English – “its teaching, assessment, and use in business will be affected in a rapidly changing world”.

The publication is part of a long-term research programme designed to identify which “key trends will define the role of English as a global language in the coming decade” and also to explore “the issues and opportunities for countries around the world in achieving their goals for the use of English”.

This article looks at some of the main points of the research, including what role the English language might play in multicultural societies and to what extent employment drives the future of English.

Read on to find out more…

The global dominance of the English language

The English language is the most spoken language in the world, with around 1.5billion people speaking it natively, or as a second language.

It has the ability to connect people (through a shared first or second language) and is also one of the UN’s 6 official languages alongside, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and French.

According to the British Council publication, English will remain the “dominant global lingua franca (a language used by people with different native languages to communicate with each other), but the role it plays in the lives of individuals or in policies will begin to change”.

This change is dependent upon many factors including the ‘digital divide’.

Many communities around the world have limited access to technology which can impact their ability to learn the English language leading to significant social, economic, and educational repercussions for those communities.

However, the publication suggest that the English language can look forward to continued prominence with the “number of learners remaining stable or rising over the next ten years”.

The role of English in multicultural societies

The publication used data and information from 49 countries and territories, many of which are now multicultural societies.

This multiculturalism has become the norm in many regions due to exploration, colonisation, migration and latterly, globalization.

Within these multicultural societies, English is often one the languages used by individuals during everyday conversations and has given rise to non-native speaking people using a “full range of languages organically and fluidly – a practice known as ‘translanguaging’.”

This has led to some governments restricting the use of English in certain settings (such as the Italian government) while others (such as the Ukrainian government) have pushed for dual language signs throughout the country and are creating regulations for promoting the use of the English language among officials.

The publication suggests that the English language now increasingly “belongs” to anybody that uses it, and it can be used however they like, in whatever form suits the situation, in order to successfully interact with others.

To what extent does employment drive the use of English?

Globalization and technological advances have changed the way organizations and corporations operate, and this had led to a change in skills required of employees.

According to the publication, many of these organizations previously desired employees who possessed highly technical skills, but now they are looking for employees who are good all-rounders with the ability to combine technical know-how with interpersonal ‘soft skills’ such as cultural awareness, teambuilding and problem solving.

These skills are vital in multicultural teams or multilingual workforces which are now far more common.

As with social and personal communications around the world, English is also the lingua franca of the business world.

It is often the ‘official’ language of choice for multinational organizations, and so the notion of ‘international business’ demands the expansion and the development of the use of English.

Similarly, English is becoming a “requirement for all sectors of industry” at all levels and it is not only those in senior positions or professional roles who are required to be proficient in the English language, but also those who work in lower-skilled roles such as, tourism or retail.

The publication also addresses the question of whether “English [will] remain the world’s most sought-after language”.

It suggests that its use, and the number of learners will likely rise over the next decade, and the main factors for this will be education, employment, technology and global mobility.

Employers, parents, and learners are driving the need for English language education and proficiency as they see it as a “necessity for success in life, learning and employment”.

As the data shows, “the future of English is interesting, dynamic and contextual” and for now at least, English is set to continue to “connect people and change lives”.

There are many fascinating and remarkable facts and features about the world’s languages, ranging from the sheer diversity and number of them, to the skill of multilingual individuals capable of speaking in many tongues.

Below we delve into the world of languages and explore some of the most extraordinary features…

Language, speech and communication

As humans, we are gifted with the amazing characteristics of speech, communication and language, and with the help of digital technologies we can now connect with people on the other side of the world, have a conversation with someone who doesn’t speak our language, or even learn a new language, or two, ourselves.

There are over 7,000 languages in the world at present but there are fears that some of the rarest ones are in decline due to fewer speakers and the amalgamation of people in what were once, far-flung regions of the world.

About 40% of these rare languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers so it is seen as an important task to preserve and record these languages for future generations.

Of course, some languages are very common and have millions of speakers worldwide.

The UN lists six official languages:

• Arabic

• English

• French

• Russian

• Spanish

• Chinese

These languages account for just under 3 billion (less than half) of the world’s population as either a first or second languages.

The world’s most multilingual country

Many countries have more than one official language; Bolivia, for example, lists 37 official languages while the UAE lists only one official language (Arabic) even though many Emiratis speak fluent English and it is considered a common language in the region.

Surprisingly, the world’s most multilingual country is believed to be Papua New Guinea.

There are over 800 indigenous languages spoken here due to the country’s vast cultural and biological diversity which has previously meant that native people were naturally segregated by geographical features such as dense forests or mountains, so each area had its own language.

The official languages of the region reflect its colonial past with English, Tok Pisin (English-based with an indigenous mix) and Hiri Motu (based on the Motu language but with added English and Tok Pisin).

Many of the languages spoken in Papua New Guinea are now considered to be endangered with young people preferring to speak in one of the three official languages.

Other countries with diverse and multiple languages include:

Indonesia – just over 700 recorded languages but only around 250 of these are commonly spoken today

Nigeria – over 500 languages are recorded but there is dispute if these are dialects or languages. English is generally used in schools and for official purposes with around 60,000 000 speakers. Hausa is second with 48,000 000 speakers

India – around 400 languages including 387 living and 11 extinct languages

United States of America – 350+ according to census information

The world’s top ten most spoken languages

While there are thousands of different languages, and possibly millions of distinct dialects, the following languages are the world’s most spoken according to Ethnologue who have collected language data over the last 15 years:

Let’s be honest, there isn’t really any industry, or global firm, that doesn’t benefit from translation and localization services, but there are a few industries for whom these language services are absolutely vital, ensuring firms are able to meet their legal and regulatory obligations, and trade within a specific location or country.

However, translation and localization services aren’t just about meeting a legal obligation, they also ensure effective communication with regional audiences, giving firms a dependable brand presence and a recognizable ‘local’ identity.

Language services give global firms a direct and meaningful connection to their target audience.

Professional language services providers (LSPs) work with a variety of industries on a daily basis to create and foster this ‘connection’ but here at Creative Word, we tend to work with a few specific industries more frequently than others.

Below you’ll find the top 3 industries that use our language services and which benefit from our translation and localization services on a regular basis.

1. Legal industry

As mentioned in the introduction above, many industries require translation and localization services for legal reasons, including everything from employment contracts to MOUs (memorandum of understanding).

Virtually every type of industry, operating outside of their domestic market, will require translations of a legal nature due to ensuring compliance with local legal regulations and guidelines.

These usually tend to be certified translations and carry a legal obligation to be formally translated and ‘certified’ by a qualified LSP or translator.

The same is also true for individuals requiring legal translations such as official documents (marriage certificates, visas, immigration documents, and so on).

However, here at Creative Word, we don’t only work with individuals, and industry-wide legal translations.

Our partnerships with many legal firms in Dubai led us to open our regional office there in 2010 and enables us to better serve our legal clients in the region, offering a comprehensive range of language services to legal professionals.

We also work the Dubai Legal Affairs Department, so our clients can expect their translations to be accurate and reliable.

We offer the following legal services:
Legal Translations
Certified Translations
Contract Translations
Ministry of Justice (MOJ) certified translations
Court Interpreters
Transcriptions – court and arbitration hearings
CLPD Training
Cultural Awareness Training

2. Financial industry

The finance industry is extraordinarily complex and its language requirements are also intricate, including aspects such as, industry-specific terminology, precise practices, and regional variations (including legal variances).

Providing translation and localization services for the finance industry means working in partnership with banks, insurance companies, fintech providers, investment houses, and so on.

Customized language services are essential; accuracy, security, reliability and time-sensitivity are also paramount.

Global players within the finance industry need to attract customers from multiple countries around the world which means adapting everything from localized customer services and chat bots to marketing materials and in-store documents.

At Creative Word, we work closely with our finance partners such as, the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) offering the following language services:

Translation – financial statements, annual reports, RFP’s proposals, presentations, websites, contracts, editorial etc.
Interpreters – business meetings, negotiations, conferences
Training – business etiquette, cultural awareness, language
Localization – websites, e-commerce, digital media

3. Tourism industry

The tourism industry relies heavily on language services to attract overseas customers through marketing materials.
For many countries, tourism is also the backbone of economy, and attracting as many tourists as possible is essential to the well-being of the majority of the population.

For instance, in Macau (a city and special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China) over 50% of the GDP is generated by direct travel and tourism, and in the Maldives, a third of GDP is due to tourism.

As a language services provider based in Dubai, with offices in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, we have a superior understanding of the requirements of the travel industry.

This led to being the preferred choice of LSP for FlyDubai, for whom we have completed numerous translation projects in 15 language pairs, alongside interpreting and website translation.

We worked directly with the internal content management system (CMS), press releases, marketing & advertising, manuals and legal documents.

We support our travel and tourism clients with the following services:

Translation – websites, press releases, brochures, marketing materials, apps
Interpreters – concierge services, business meetings, conferences
Training – etiquette, protocol, customer service, cultural awareness, language
Localization – social media, software, digital media

Whatever industry your firm operates within, and whichever language(s) you require for your translation project, the Creative Word team are ready to help you achieve your objective.

Contact us now to find out more.

The retail sector is renowned for its highly competitive nature and while the online marketplace has opened up global possibilities for many firms, it has also heightened competition and increased the need for translation services in order to better serve customers around the globe.

Translations services for the retail sector help to drive sales by providing potential customers with detailed information about products in their native language, localizing marketing campaigns, and improving multilingual customer services.

Research also shows that over 70% of customers want product reviews in their native language, 65% prefer to read content (including websites, blogs, and online customer services) in their primary language, and 40% won’t even consider making a purchase in another language.

Translation services for the retail sector are essential for international success – read on to discover more…

What Type of Translation Services are used by the Retail Sector?

Translation services for the retail sector can cover everything from product packaging to overseas employee contracts and the services each retail firm requires will be different based upon their needs in any given moment.

However, there are some translation services which are routinely used in the retail sector, and we have outlined these below:

• Product Packaging – this is vital for overseas customers and in many countries is a legal requirement of a sale. Accurately translated product packing ensures customers know exactly what they are buying and what is in the box.

• Marketing – translating or localizing marketing campaigns offers retail firms greater opportunities for success and ensures your target audience engage with the campaign at every level. If they don’t understand your ad, or it causes cultural offence, they aren’t likely to make a purchase.

• Point of Sale Material – you know your target audience and what might sway them to make a purchase in your home territory, but customers aren’t always the same the world over. POS materials must be localized for each region or language to attract potential customers and retain existing ones.

• Customer Services – making international sales is great but if you don’t offer native-language customer services or after-care you risk losing repeat custom and your brand reputation can suffer.

• Brochures – these might be available online or as a physical object but if your customers can’t understand the language in which they are written, they wont engage with the information, products or services offered.

• Website Translation and Localization – often the first port of call for international sales is your website. The statistics in the introduction above, show just how important it is to have a website which offers native-language product reviews, content, and purchase options.

• App Localization and Translation – many customers are now using retailer’s apps to make purchases, so it makes sense to localize your app for customers who don’t speak the primary language as it encourages engagement and improves user experience. Mobile App usage has increased significantly over the last few years and looks set to continue on this trend.

Why Use Translation Services for the Retail Sector?

E-Commerce now dominates most firms’ revenues and has revolutionized how we shop, do business, and make purchases.

However, to compete successfully at a global level it is necessary to offer multilingual options for customers whose native language doesn’t match your website’s first language.

For instance, a high-end retail firm originating in the UAE, with an Arabic-language only website, is unlikely to appeal to a native English-speaking audience (even if they like the products), but if they offer an English-language version then they increase their chances of making a sale in the UK or to other English-speaking audiences.

It is also worth remembering that retail translation services are based on more than just language – they must also consider cultural aspects linked to any new regions, countries, or languages in order to ensure your message is understood by your new audience.

Similarly, your brand must be translated and localized for new audiences so that there is instantly recognizable consistency around the globe, yet it remains culturally acceptable in each location.

A Professional Language Services Provider (LSP) can assist with all of the above, and the following points highlight how working with the right LSP can help your retail firm achieve global success:

• Larger Audience – the world is big place with a potential audience of around 7billion people, in order to reach them, you’ll need to speak their language!

• More Sales – with 40% of consumers saying they won’t consider making a purchase in another language it makes financial sense to translate and localize for multiple languages.

• Cultural Acceptance and Sensitivity – localizing your content for a specific audience is essential in order to ensure your message is accurate and appropriate, and to help overcome cultural barriers.

• SEO – offering your website in multiple languages, and using translated/localized keywords, will improve your rank on search engines and ensure your audience can find you and your products.

• Competition – expanding into the global marketplace obviously offers an additional revenue opportunity but translating your website can also improve sales within your home territory to foreign-language speaking residents.

• Boosting Brand Awareness – multilingual marketing and websites help to boost your brand awareness and is actually a very cost-effective method for increasing global engagement.

At Creative Word, we’ve supported many international firms with their translation and localization projects to help them achieve their global ambitions.

Contact us now to see how we can help you.

When you’re working with a Language Services Provider (LSP) on a technical translation project, be it an engineering report for the oil industry or a legal court document, there is no margin for errors – every fact and figure must be accurate, and every word of the terminology must be precise.

It is, as the name suggests, a highly technical field!

However, there are a few tips that can make the process easier for everyone involved, and that ensure the translation project goes smoothly from start to finish.

1. Keep it Simple

This may sound contrary to the blog title, after all, how can something technical be made simple?

However, there are ways to minimise the potential risk for errors, and keeping things as simple as possible is definitely number 1 on the list.

In order to keep things as simple as possible follow these guidelines:

• Ensure you are clear on your brief and consistent in all discussions with your LSP

• Keep language and sentence structure as straightforward as possible, avoiding protracted linguistic constructions!

• Provide your LSP with as much supporting documentation as possible (manuals, regulations, product data, and so on)

• Create a list of industry specific terms so this can be translated in readiness for the main project

2. Choose a Language Services Provider who Specializes in your Industry

If you require a technical translation, you’ll need to recruit a LSP who uses linguists and translators who are also experts in your industry.

For example, here at Creative Word, our key areas of expertise are:

• Legal translations

• Tourism Translations

• Oil and Gas

• Financial

• Marketing and PR

• Media and TV

• Publishing

• Retail

This means, that when we perform a translation within one of these industries, we will use a translator, or group of translators, who are also trained in the related industry.

In this way, our clients can be certain they will receive the most accurate translation possible.

Using a translator trained in your industry ensures they have an intimate knowledge of the terminology, acronyms, market, and the expected standards required for this type of translation.

Similarly, the translator should also be a native speaker of the target language.

Native speakers understand linguistic nuance, tone of voice, cultural references, audience expectations, and are able to ensure your message is clearly and accurately conveyed.

3. Create a Glossary of Terms

Working with a professional language services provider on your technical translation project will certainly help to smooth the process and ensure your project is completed on time and within budget.

One way you can help guarantee consistency and accuracy within the translation project is by providing your LSP with a glossary of terms.

This glossary should cover all frequently used terms, contain a list of acronyms and abbreviations (and their meaning), list specific phrases commonly used, and also any personally preferred terms or words linked to your particular business or industry.

This glossary can be used on successive translation projects, helping to ensure consistency throughout each and every project. It can also be updated regularly so that it remains current.

Translation is essential in the tourism industry; international visitors want to browse a hotel’s website before committing to a booking, airlines need to ensure their travel information is accessible to global customers, and governments need to promote their country via multilingual websites.

The tourism industry has quickly adapted to the digital revolution giving global travellers the opportunity to explore their choices for day trips, hotels, restaurants, and so on, before stepping a sandal on sunny shores!

However, the large number of transactions which are completed daily online within the tourism industry are due, in a large part, to translation services.

Translation and tourism go hand-in-hand and below you’ll find more reasons why this is the case…

International Customers Expect Quality Translations

Of course, this doesn’t just apply to the tourism industry, but potential tourism customers are unlikely to complete a booking if they can’t understand specific instructions, or if it appears the company have put little effort into their translated website.

As a matter of fact, customers are more inclined to click off a website that is poorly translated than make the purchase, and this is often due to a lack of trust in the website generated by the inaccurate translation.

Research conducted in 2019 by the Common Sense Advisory Research (CSA) found that we prefer to purchase online in our native language and believe that a quality translation conveys the “brand, reputation, and trustworthiness” of a business.

Multilingual Translation Helps Promote Individual Tourism-based Firms

Reaching new clients who don’t speak the same language as you is far easier with a quality, professional translation.

Potential customers can find you in their online search, browse your website, confidently make a purchase and will be happy to recommend you to other people.

Translating and localizing a tourism-based website is just the first step in reaching international customers – there is also the potential to reach many more by translating social media platforms, blogs, customer services, and so on.

Translation Improves SEO for Tourism Industry Websites

In order for a tourism-based firm to rank on search engines in another country (and language) they must offer content in the new language.

For instance, if you have an English-language only website you aren’t going to rank on a search engine in any other language so could potentially miss new foreign customers.

Reaching global customers means translating your website into specific languages that best suits your requirements and objectives so that you will improve your SEO ranking on online searches.

Translation for Tourism Requires Native Speaking Linguists

This actually applies to all translations, no matter which industry or language.

Native speaking linguists offer the best language adaption for foreign customers and ensure the original message is conveyed accurately, sensitively, and with cultural relevance.

For tourism translations, it also helps to find a translator who has knowledge of not only the language and culture, but also the topography of the country.

For instance, it is difficult to accurately describe a setting such as, a quaint English village, if you have never seen one!
