Legal Translations in Dubai

Legal translations are essential – businesses, individuals, corporations, governments and so on, all need to use legal translations for ‘official’ documents.

However, all too often, legal translations can be confusing and perplexing, (especially for those new to Dubai or UAE) so this blog has been designed to help you make an informed and educated decision regarding your legal translations.

What is Legal Translation?

Legal translations are not documents that have been translated for legal businesses such as law firms, or solicitors.

They are instead, documents which have an official capacity, similar to those known as ‘attested’, ‘official, or ‘sworn’ in other countries.

Documents such as wills, marriage and birth certificates, diplomas, trademarks, insurance policies and so on, are an example of the kind of document which frequently requires legal translation.

Within the UAE, translators who are legally certified to complete these types of translations are called Legal Translators. They are the equivalent of ‘Sworn’ or ‘Certified Translators’ overseas.

Legal Translations are the translation of these official documents for use in any sanctioned capacity, by a translator who is authorised to do so.

Who can perform a Legal Translation?

To perform legal translations within the UAE and Dubai, a translation provider should have the following credentials:

  • ISO: 9001 accredited processes and procedures
  • Translators must be certified and authorised by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ)
  • Translators will be issued with a legal stamp by the MOJ

The guidelines, set by the Ministry of Justice, state that all documents which have been issued outside of the UAE must be stamped at a local office of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

For instance, if a birth certificate was issued in the UK it would need to be attested by the UAE Embassy in the UK. It must then be attested and stamped at a local office of MoFA before being ready for translation by a Legal Translator in Dubai or the UAE.
