Legislation introduced in 2015 in Dubai, UAE requires all Legal Consultants, who are registered on the roll in the category of practising Legal Consultants, to obtain sixteen CLPD points on a yearly basis.
What is CLPD? Continuing Legal Professional Development
Each of these points are awarded for completing obligatory training courses and accredited activities which are set by the Dubai Government’s Legal Affairs Department.
The Department’s aim is to provide a world-class learning environment to enable Legal Consultants to meet the ever-evolving requirements of their clients.
The sixteen points are awarded as follows:
* 8 points – Mandatory CLPD activities offered through four training courses, each 2 hours in duration
* 8 points – Accredited CLPD activities selected by the Legal Consultant from the proffered accredited activities submitted by the Department. Each activity is worth no more than four points.
If any Legal Consultant is registered with the Dispute Resolution Authority they are required to obtain additional points.
Mandatory CLPD Activities
There are over twenty possible pathways for Legal Consultants to choose between to complete the mandatory activities.
These can be tailored to personal interests and preference, and consist of five substantive and two ethical topics.
The Department annually develops the Mandatory Activities in accordance with the demands and requirements of the legal work in the United Arab Emirates in general, and Dubai in particular.
Accredited CLPD Points
Legal Consultants may choose which accredited activities to attend during each filing period in order to achieve their required accredited CLPD points.
Accredited courses may cover topics such as, Merges and Acquisitions, Islamic Banking and Finance, or Introduction to FinTech.
These accredited courses are designed to ensure an understanding of crucial business developments and should guarantee a competitive edge for Legal Consultants.
