Yousuf Al Serkal, President of the UAE Football Association and Vice President of the Asian Football Confederation [AFC], today launched an election manifesto for his bid to become President of the AFC. Kwintessential Arabia ensured the message was understood in both English and Arabic with simultaneous interpreting services at the press conference.
Under the slogan ‘Football at Heart’, Yousuf Al Serkal, who has spent more than 20 years working in Football administration, holding senior level positions within UAE, Asian and international Football organisations, outlined his vision for the AFC saying:
“We are at a time when our stakeholders believe that leaders in the game are only in it for themselves – this must change. I want to see an AFC where Football is the first and only topic on our agenda”
“We have some big challenges ahead but through openness and real dialogue, we have a genuine opportunity to reunite Asian football, achieve positive change and set a course for a brighter future for the whole of football in the region. In particular I want to bring Asia towards the World Cup through increased technical development programmes and sound governance”
“Today I am launching my campaign manifesto which includes six specific pledges that will underpin and define my Presidency if I am successful. It is both an exciting and challenging time for football in Asia, but I believe I have the vision, experience and determination to help deliver a positive step-change in standards, both on and off the field, that will be felt for years to come.”
Yousuf Al Serkal’s six campaign pledges are to:
- Reunite Asian Football
- Improve governance
- Ensure a balance between professional and amateur football
- Decentralise AFC activities
- Balance revenue distribution
- Embrace the diversity of Asia at AFC House
Speaking about his pledges, Al Serkal said:
“If I am successful, I will lead the way to make the AFC much more transparent with improved governance in order that we regain the integrity of the game in Asia. It is important that I lead by example, and so I will publically declare all allowances and benefits given to me by the Confederation, and expenditure incurred by my office. I will also introduce a ‘whistle blower’ programme to allow players and officials to report in absolute confidence any irregularities – whether in match fixing or any issue relating to football.”
“It is also critical that we bridge the gap between professional and amateur football across Asia. So with a focus on elevating standards in our flagship competitions, it is important that more Member Associations participate in the AFC Asian Cup and AFC Champions League. We can do this through more hands on, local development programmes for leagues, clubs, youth and women’s football, and this is something I am absolutely committed to.”
The AFC President will be elected on 2 May in Kuala Lumpur at the AFC Extraordinary Congress.
