The Covid-19 pandemic created a situation where team building training was a virtual affair which, by necessity, led to many of us sitting in our home offices (or more likely, the kitchen table or the corner of the bedroom) trying to ‘connect’ with people on our screens via zoom after already spending an inordinate amount of time staring at said screen for official work purposes.
Fortunately, it seems as though the worst of the pandemic is behind us and we can now look forward to returning to our offices, seeing our colleagues (in person, not via a screen) and resuming as near to normal work practices as possible.
However, this return to the workplace is likely to feel like a double-edged sword for many of us.
Some will have started new jobs during the pandemic and will be meeting their colleagues face-to-face for the first time, some will have trouble adjusting to the commute and change of work environment, others will need time to adapt to shifts in work demands, while some will have completely forgotten what it means to be part of a cohesive team who are all pulling in the same direction and at the same time.
It may take us all a period of time to adjust to the ‘new normal’!
And this is why team building training is more important than ever.
Team building training has the ability to help us overcome many of these difficulties and is especially useful after periods of absence where employees have been working autonomously and independently of each other, where there are new employees, or when working with people from a variety of different cultures.
The following examples highlight the power of team building training and show how it helps create mutually beneficial working environments where individuals learn to work as an effective team.
1. Team Building Training Enhances Employee Engagement
Over the last couple of years, since the pandemic struck, we have all been working as remote teams.
Some of us have enjoyed better engagement than others but most of us have struggled at some point to feel like we’re a valued part of the team and that we are engaging on all levels.
Getting back into the office or workplace can help to create the opportunity for a positive atmosphere but it might take some time and an extended period of adjustment for many.
However, using team building training at the earliest opportunity, will bring everyone together; sparking interest, encouraging empathy, creating respect and offering effective techniques to help identify and address any issues before they become deep-rooted.
2. Team Building Training Encourages Communication
Professional team building activities and programmes allow and encourage communication between employees, leadership and management.
This applies not only to work-based conversations but also to the more intimate communications that have been lacking due to remote working procedures and furlough.
Returning to the workplace is likely to cause stress and anxiety for many of us, so any opportunity to talk about these shared experiences and help us develop meaningful relationships is a positive step.
Similarly, for those who work with people from different cultures, especially expats in overseas postings or employees from diverse backgrounds, team building training offers an ideal opportunity to get together as a cohesive whole, ask questions, share experiences and develop those interpersonal relationships which underpin an effective and productive team.
3. Team Building Training Improves Teamwork
This should probably be obvious but team building training is one of the best ways to improve teamwork (ensuring everyone is on the same page, confident of their position and conscious of collective goals) especially after the extended period of solitary working throughout lockdown.
Of course, there will also be those individuals who have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working alone and who thrived with limited contact with managers and colleagues, but they will also benefit from the opportunity to engage with others by remembering how to share ideas, develop friendships and build trust.
