Using an Interpreter in the UAE – Common Questions

Looking to hire an interpreter in the UAE? Here are some of the more common questions people have prior to book a professional interpreter for the first time.

“Which type of interpreter do I need?”

There are a few types of interpreter in terms of the way the translation takes place. Have a read of this article that explains the four basic types, or we have provided some examples below of the more common situations in which we provide interpreters.

1. Small Meeting or Presentation – If there is a meeting between a small number of people or if you are giving a presentation or pitch, you will need what is known as a consecutive interpreter. When you pause at the end of each sentence, they will translate what has just been said. The consecutive interpreter is perhaps the most used type of interpreting as it is flexible and personal.

2. Large meeting or conference – For a large meeting or conference with speakers and delegates, the most suitable interpreter is what is known as a conference interpreter. They sit in booths and translate live, as the speaker talks, through a microphone which connects via headsets to the listening audience.

3. Short-notice or remote – If you have the sudden need to communicate with someone such as a visitor to reception or if the person you need to speak with is at a distance, the most suitable interpreter is a telephone interpreter who works like a consecutive interpreter, only on the phone in the way of a 3-way call.

“What is the difference between conference and simultaneous interpreting?”

There is no difference. Conference interpreting refers to simultaneous interpreting carried out at conferences. Not all conferences use simultaneous interpreters and not all simultaneous interpreting takes places at conferences. Most of the time the two are used interchangeably.

“What is the difference between consecutive and simultaneous interpreting?”

Consecutive interpreting is when the interpreter listens to the speaker for a while, the speaker stops and then the interpreter translates. This takes place in meetings, in court hearings and similar situations.

Simultaneous interpreting is real-time interpreting where the interpreter is speaking the translation at the same time as listening. They usually sit in booths transmitting to listeners with headsets.

“How many interpreters do I need?”

Possibly depending on what the interpreters are needed for. Simultaneous interpreters always work in pairs or teams as they do not usually translate for more than 20 minutes at a time due to the stresses of the job. Consecutive interpreters on the other hand usually work alone unless circumstances require support such as a long working day or large numbers of people. “Do I need equipment?”

“How do you select the best interpreter?”

All interpreters are qualified professional interpreters. The factors considered when selecting the the best interpreter comes down to areas such as experience, knowledge of a specific topic/subject matter, language combinations and availability.

“Do you offer interpreting services outside of the UAE?”

“How far in advance should I book an interpreter?”

As soon as you know you need one. Simultaneous interpreters in the UAE can be booked 6-12 months in advance. Consecutive interpreters can be arranged at short notice however it is always best to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

“Do I need to provide the interpreter any additional information before the job?”

Any materials that can be given to the interpreter prior to the assignment will only help them deliver a better service. Allowing time to look at presentations, speeches, notes, etc helps the interpreter prepare, look up terminology and improve their fluency on the day.
